Ulaanbaatar 1-4 July

We arrived with all our luggage and bicycles in Ulaanbaatar with about 1.5 hours delay butthe booked taxi was luckily still waiting for us. Ulaanbaatar is still the same as 2 years ago, dusty with heavy chaotic traffic, so it seems like we never left.

Ulaanbaatar traffic
We extended our visa without problem on the first day (Tuesday 1 July), but were too late to book our flight to Olgii in western Mongolia. At the guesthouse before going out to dinner we saw the demonstrations in Sukhbaatar Square on TV; people are angry with the outcome of the elections and claim that the counting was corrupt. Later at night we heard that the demonstrations had become violent, with the leading party`s HQ`s being burned down and the neighbouring modern art gallery looted and burned. The government has declared a state of emergency with curfews between 10pm and 8am in central Ulaanbaatar, no sales of alcohol and riot police and military out in force. Apart from the restaurants closing early and the occasional tank blocking the street for curfew we notice very little of all this as tourists.

There were no seats available for the flight on Thursday unfortunately, but we managed to book the flight to Olgii for Saturday. We had hoped to go hiking in Terelj today, but it rained heavily all day so we decided to sample Ulaanbaatar`s cafe`s instead.
